If your goal is to lose, gain or maintain your weight knowing the amount of calories you are aiming for can be important.
If weight loss is what you are looking for then the rule of the deficit is going to be key for you. To shed those pounds, you need to create a calorie deficit. Choosing nutrient-dense foods that'll satisfy your hunger whilst keeping to your recommended calories is key. Think lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, veggies, and healthy fats.
If you are looking to maintain weight or gain weight, your calories need to be set at your calorie maintenance amount or a calorie surplus respectively.

Many people find it easier to think of their amount to aim for over a 7 day period. To do this take your recommended daily amount and multiply it by 7. Then plan your weekly meals, snacks and drinks with that figure in mind. This way you can build in treats, nights out or other social events and stay within the amount you are aiming for.
The calorie amount given is for guidance so please do not become totally focused on it - eating a nutritious diet is just as important.
